AWEHIYO
THOMAS and The Canadian Women's Field Lacrosse - WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Awehiyo
Thomas has been named to the roster of
Team Canada 2003. World Championships were held at Towson, Maryland
June 26 to July 5, 2003. Team Canada 2003 acheived a Bronze medal.
The National Team program began in August of 2001. Originally there
were over 80 athletes participating in training camps and exhibition
tournaments. There are now 16 Team members and one alternate. It
is a wonderful acknowledgement of Awehiyo's skills and abilities
as a Lacrosse player that she has been named to the National Team.
She has trained daily and is one of the very few players who can
fire from either side.Awehiyo is an elegant player.
The team has been travelling and competing over the last 18 months,
including a trip to England playing a number of teams and winning
a match with the National English A Team.
Although the Government of Canada recognized Lacrosse as "Canada's
National Summer Sport" in 1994, Sport Canada does not support
International competition for Canadian Lacrosse teams. All of the
funding is generated by the team itself through a variety of activities
and events. The players also must cover their own expenses.
Awehiyo is 16 years old and lives at Six Nations of the Grand River
Territory. Her family and friends would like to thank all those
who helped her with their kind donations and fundraising events.
